Founded by Suraj Bacha Gian, a marine biologist with over 18 years of experience in coral reef ecology, ichthyoplankton, restoration, and donor-funded project management, EMCL operates across research, restoration, auditing, and capacity building domains.

Mr. Suraj Bacha Gian, the Director of Eco Marine Consultants Ltd (Mauritius), is a distinguished marine scientist specialised in coral reef ecology, coral farming, reef restoration, ichthyoplankton taxonomy, and marine biotechnology. With an MSc in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Mauritius, he has a robust academic background. From 2022 to 2024, he served as Senior Research Programme Manager at Reef Conservation, leading high-impact projects such as the UNDP/Adaptation Fund's Coral Restoration Project, Coral Restoration Training Programmes, VMCA feasibility projects, the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) project - Component Coral Bleaching, and the Integrated Environmental Monitoring Programme. He played a crucial role in securing EU funding for a land-based coral culture project for restoration, conservation, and education (2024-2029).
Before joining Reef Conservation, Mr. Bacha Gian spent over 15 years at the Mauritius Oceanography Institute (MOI), where he progressed from a trainee to Head of the Biological Oceanography Unit. His tenure at MOI involved overseeing projects on coral farming, small-scale reef restoration, ecological monitoring, biodiversity assessment, and biotope mapping. He also provided technical support for establishing specialised laboratories in Mauritius and Rodrigues (at SEMPA).
Mr. Bacha Gian has also managed numerous externally funded projects, including significant UNEP-WIOSAP and UNDP initiatives, focusing on sustainable marine practices and biodiversity assessment. An accomplished scientific writer, he has published several reports and articles, and his work has been presented at international conferences, workshops, and featured in media outlets, highlighting his commitment to marine conservation and education.
His dedication extends to training and mentoring the next generation of marine scientists, as well as having trained over 300 individuals, including fishermen, community members, NGO staff, and hoteliers, in coral restoration techniques. Mr. Bacha Gian's ability to secure funding from international, regional, and national donors underscores his exceptional skill in advancing environmental restoration projects. His extensive field experience, combined with his academic prowess, makes him a leading expert in marine environmental sciences.
